    Biography

This guitar signed by Marco Gilioli in 2025 is one of the most outstanding Torres copies that have passed through Madera and joins the exceptional Torres copy by Marrabello that we also have. At first glance, what immediately stands out is the level of detail and precision in its construction, with a spectacular rosette: one of the most complex and iconic of Torres, reproduced here with admirable fidelity and cleanliness. It is a rosette that, on its own, reveals Gilioli’s extremely high level of craftsmanship.

The woods used are another major highlight of this MADERA guitar. The spruce top features an exceptional amount of medullary rays (“espejuelo”) that are distributed across the entire surface — something clearly visible in the photos, and especially in one image we took specifically to highlight this feature with a different lighting angle. This kind of very high material quality does not guarantee great sound on its own, but it certainly provides an ideal foundation for guitar makers with knowledge, experience, and talent — as is the case with Gilioli — to achieve their full sonic potential.

As for the sound, this guitar not only visually relates to the world of Torres, but also comes close to that “Torres” sound ideal that we value so highly at Madera: a warm, sweet, deep tone full of beauty. Its expressive capacity is broad, with many colors and nuances. We were especially struck by the velvety character of the trebles, which brings a very special timbral richness and an elegance that is captivating when played.

Italy is becoming one of the places in Europe where more and better Torres copies are currently being built. At Madera — and we say this as Spaniards — we recognize that we can find in Spain extraordinary guitar makers who have also authentically captured the essence of Torres (such as Francisco Jiménez, one of our favorites). But in Italy, we find nowadays a higher nembers of makers like Botelli, Lodi, Marrabello, and Marco Gilioli himself, who have been able to capture with great sensitivity both the constructive spirit and the sonic soul of Torres guitars.

This Gilioli 2025 is a magnificent example of all of that. GILIOLI gave everything from himself to build this MADERA guitar. Built with passion, talent, knowledge, and respect for one of the most important traditions in the history of the guitar.

Marco studied at the School of Lutherie in Milan and graduated there in 2011.

Shortly afterwards he set up his workshop not far from Milan and specialized in the detailed study of the work of perhaps the most important guitar maker in history, Antonio de Torres. He started to make a model of Torres which he called Torres Replica and in which he dedicated his whole career. Soon became known in the guitar world as one of the builders who currently comes closest to the kind of warm, sweet traditional Spanish sound that is so pleasing and transmits so much to the listener.
