    DESCRIPTION & CONTENTS

“J. S. Bach’s Suite BWV 996, probably composed for the Lute-Harpsichord, has been the subject of numerous adaptations for guitars having 6, 8, 10 and 11 strings over the few decades. This transcription was made with the desire to be as close to the past original score as possible, and to offer a technically and musically satisfying version for the 6-string guitar. To this end, I have transposed the piece into F-sharp minor and employed a rarely used scordatura, characterized by the difference of a third between the 5th and 4th strings, which allows for a more open sound and facilitates playing for a number of complex passages.

At the end of the work, I have provided suggestions for the execution of ornaments. Rhythmic notation here is, of course, approximate because this system cannot account for natural inflections inherent in the various types of ornaments.
It is my very sincere wish that you may find renewed pleasure in the adaption of this magnificent music.”
     Gérard Abiton
